This is the third part of my build, September to
November 2008
The index to all the parts of my build diary is HERE
Month 7
- September 2008
A hole is drilled at 35 degrees in the block to accept the strut
All parts screw together
All ready to fit on the leg
Shoulder parts get threads cut in them for the fixing bolts
Finally brave enough to cut the slots on the surved parts of the booster covers
Ankle details cut in plywwod
Month 8
- October 2008
Plastic pipe to make the ankle cylinders
Using an offcut of MDF with a tight hole in it I can scribe lines around the pipes
Ends are sealed with more plywood
The back of the ankle cylinders are notched to fit oner the legs
End details of the cylinders are fixed with glue and cocktail stick dowels
Dowels fitted to hold the cylinders onto the legs
Center leg gets a cylinder both sides
Outside legs get just one cylinder each
Bottom of the booster cover gets dowels that fit in holes in the ankle
Back of the booster cover also gets dowels to hold them in position
Getting there
The ankle details also get fitted with dowels to fix them in position
The detail is fitted both sides of the ankles
horseshoes get fixing dowels fitted in them. Also, a slightly smaller shim gets drilled to
clear the dowels and the bolt heads for the buttons etc
Holes in the top of the leg for the horseshoe fixing dowels
A bit of redundant MDF is removed to save some weight
Horseshoe and shim fitted to the leg leaving a nice groove detail
Nearly there with all the leg parts
Big holes drilled in the shoulder hubs. These 12 large holes saved 1/2lb in weight!
Month 9
- November 2008
Simple bracket for fixing the top of the leg strut
This will be hidden by the booster cover
Wedge and crescent parts fitted above and below the ankle cylinders
Body filler is used to make a perfect fit between the parts and the cylinder. The filler
doesn't stick to the black tape that can be seen in the previous photo
Wedge is made of three bits of 6mm MDF, shaped and glued to the cylinder
Crescent is fitted to the leg
All part in place
Nearly there
Center leg also gets wedges
Using filler for a tight fit
Wedge glued to the cylinders
Center leg done
Bolt fixed in the back of the shoulder hub (the white bit)
